The City Hall of Zalău was built between 1872 and 1889, most probably after the plans of the architect from Cluj Debreczeni Balasz.

The initial destination of the building was an administrative palace, headquarters of the Prefecture, the Court, the District Court and the Prosecution of the Sălaj County.

The building, designed in a neo-baroque style, has the shape of a trapeze, with an inner yard having three entries from the outside. The building’s most important element is the 1450 kg chandelier, more than 100 years old, from the "Avram Iancu” event room. The building that hosts today the Local Council and the Municipality of Zalău was finished in 1889 and, at the time, hosted the Prefecture, the Court, the District Court and the Prosecution of the Sălaj County.

The City Hall is a monument nominated for the Historical Monuments List 2010, 329th place, and code SJ-II-m-B-04991.

The building, designed in a neo-baroque style, has the shape of a trapeze, with an inner yard having three entries from the outside. Upstairs, the inner yard has a wooden balcony, on two sides, supported by cast iron consoles. The railing is made up of the same material.

The main façade is decorated in a new-baroque style and has a “portal” entry, guarded by two lanterns made of wrought iron and two spiral shaped consoles. These support the upstairs balcony, whose railing is also made of wrought iron.
