Created after 1854, when the city administration allotted the amount of 12 646 K 75 FIL to build it, the “Angels Fountain” as it is known by the inhabitants of the Zalău city, is one of the landmarks for entire generations of Zalau citizens.

Along time, the “Angels Fountain" suffered changes concerning its aspect and location. In the past, the foundation had the same round shape, but it was only a basin guarded by the 4 angels.

The angels were situated in the exterior, and water could only be taken from the sprinklers they held in their hands. At the bottom of the pedestals, on which the angels are located, there is a small basin that gathered the water and directed it towards the big collector. These small basins, situated at the base of each angel, served as an area to place the bucket or another container that was brought to take water.

Today, in order to have access to the fountain, you must descend under the street level, through an opening situated in front of the Transylvania Building, in a round space, framed by the 4 angels. This area’s floor is covered with pieces of ceramic tile. The round area is surrounded by a collector basin, plated with small pieces of ceramic tile, cut by an entry.

The information is taken from the album "Zalău – magical places" elaborated by the County Museum of History and Art Zalău, in 2012, through a cultural project financed by the Municipality of Zalău.
